Educational Services | Classroom-Level Analysis for Student Success (CLASS)

Instructional Services has partnered with Key Data Systems on the Classroom-Level Analysis for Student Success (CLASS) project. The purpose of CLASS is to assist districts, schools, and teachers to improve instructional outcomes. CLASS is made up of a unique set of reports, provided at no cost to Riverside County districts. These reports have been developed and refined over the past several years and allow districts and school sites to better understand classroom performance.

CLASS analyzes CST results three different ways to get the most consistent, fair, and accurate results.

1. Similar Class Rank
• Fair and accurate measure of classroom performance.
• Multiple years of data to determine classroom performance.
• Compares performance of classrooms with demographically similar students.
• Uses a formula similar to the Similar Schools Ranks, by CDE.

2. Achievement Value
• Considers students’ performance over the prior two years.
• Considers student demographic characteristics.
• Uses both prior performance and demographics to predict performance on CST.
• Compares the difference between the prediction and actual score.
• Gives an achievement value (AV) for each student, regardless of their current ability level.

3. Teacher Effectiveness Quadrants
• Combines the Similar Class Rank and achievement value.
• Plotted on an effectiveness graph made of four quadrants.
• Controls for student demographics.
• Controls for student prior achievement levels.

Uses for CLASS
• Identify and reward exceptional teachers.
• Use exceptional teachers as models and resources for other teachers.
• Focus examination of teaching strategies.
• Provide support, coaching, monitoring, etc. based on need.
• Provide data-driven, professional development opportunities.
