Abuelitos foster grandparent program set to begin 10th year
Riverside County Office of Education Migrant Head Start is a comprehensive early care and education child development program serving Imperial and Riverside Counties. The Abuelitos program utilizes one of the most precious, underused resources in our community, grandparents, for a multi-generational approach to early education.
Author Alex Haley once said, “Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sprinkle stardust on the lives of little children.” Intergenerational relationships are magical. Their impact can been seen time and time again through the progress of the children as a direct result of the additional one-to-one attention and loving support from the Abuelitos.
The Foster Abuelitos program was founded in 2000 as volunteer program in partnership with Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego, and funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service. Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego, is in their 37th year as sponsor of the Foster Grandparent Program serving San Diego and Imperial Counties. This past year Abuelitos provided over 9,400 volunteer hours of service, and over 100,000 hours during the past decade. The partnership has expanded from six initial volunteers to fourteen. Five of the original six Abuelitos remain committed to the program and children they serve.
The Abuelitos Program is a model of community collaboration in action, and has been highlighted as an exemplary practice in RCOE’s last two federal reviews, lauded by Riverside County Board of Education, and nominated for a national Plate of Bounty award.
