Riverside County Superintendent of SchoolsKenneth M. Young releases statement on High School Exit Exam Report
Kenneth M. Young, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, today (September 2, 2009) issued the following statement about today’s release of the latest results for the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE).
“The data shows that we have made steady progress in Riverside County in helping more students pass the high school exit exam since 2004,” Young said. “In some parts of the report the growth rate for our scores has been faster than the state. We will use this report and all of the resources available to us at the Riverside County Office of Education to help our districts improve their students’ exit exam passing rates. The exit exam is one of our indicators to show that our students are being prepared to graduate, and helping more students graduate and prepare for college and the workforce is one of our primary goals at RCOE.”
Young released the following Riverside County highlights as part of the statewide report. All statistics are based on 10th grade students taking the test for the first time -- statistics that are available to compare for all counties and the state. The statistics are not the same as the overall statewide passing rate for all students who have taken the test which combines English Language Arts and Mathematics scores:
In 2004, 18,729 10th grade students passed English Language Arts part of the CAHSEE in Riverside County. This year (2009), 25,260 10th grade students passed – that is a 35 percent increase in the passing rate. (The number of 10th grade students rose about 21 percent during the same period).
In 2004, 18,284 10th grade students passed the Mathematics part of the CAHSEE in Riverside County. This year (2009), 25,298 10th grade students passed – that is a 38% pass rate increase.

The one year change for 10th grade students in English Language Arts for the state was flat, 79 percent passed in 2008 and 2009. For Riverside County, the numbers were up from 77 percent to 78 percent passing.
