Summer job program will employ 500 young people
Kenneth M. Young, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, today (June 28, 2010) announced that more than 500 young people will be working summer jobs again this year thanks to the second year of funding for the Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP).
The program is offered through the Riverside County Office of Education Career Technical Education Unit (CTE) in collaboration with Riverside County Economic Development Agency (EDA) and Workforce Investment Board (WIB).
“This program was a tremendous success last year due to our partnership with EDA,” said Young. “We are pleased to be able to offer it again thanks to our business partners in Riverside County who are providing young people with valuable experience in the workplace.”
The students will be working at more than 300 businesses, many of which are partners with the CTE unit already. The program is made possible by $1.3 million in grants, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), awarded by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors through the WIB. RCOE received $1.2 million last year.
The school districts/cities involved in the program include Alvord, Banning, Beaumont, Blythe, Corona, Coachella, Moreno Valley, Murrieta, Palm Springs, Riverside and Val Verde. Riverside County Foster Youth will also participate.
Participants are placed in an internship for work-experience and paid a minimum wage, $8 an hour. The program is for young people ages 16-24. They will work six weeks as interns starting as early as June 21.
Jobs are available in a variety of fields including retail, office, medical/hospital, non-profit agencies, automotive and food services.
