Riverside County students take Sweepstakes Awards at 2011 Inland Area Science and Engineering Fair
More than 750 projects from students in Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino counties were on display in this year's RIMS Inland Science and Engineering Fair for students in grades 4-12. (Photos from ceremony)
This year, Riverside County students won the Sweepstakes Awards: Elementary Sweepstakes went to Steven Hoefler of Ridgemoor Elementary School in Menifee USD for his project, Preservatives Natural vs Synthetic; Reagan Risk from Desert Ridge Academy in Desert Sands USD won Junior Sweepstakes for his project, What a Lift: Force and Fluid Dynamics; and, Jessica Richeri of Centennial High School in Corona-Norco USD won Senior Sweepstakes for her project, Autonomous Robotic Vehicle's Guide to Eliminate the Traffic.
There were three divisions: Elementary (fourth- and fifth-graders), Junior (sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders) and Senior (9th- through 12th-graders).
Individual and group projects were judged in 20 categories of science - from microbiology to zoology, math and physics to electronics, and consumer sciences to earth sciences.
The regional fair is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Riverside County Office of Education, Inyo County Office of Education and Mono County Superintendent of Schools.
Winners were announced April 6. Junior and Senior Division winners will go on to the California State Science Fair Competition in Los Angeles , May 2-3.
