Riverside County sends two students to National History Day
Two Riverside County students will compete in the National History Day competition scheduled for June 12-16, 2011, at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Lelah Ericson from Vista Heights Middle School in Moreno Valley and Osten Anderson from North High School in Riverside became state champions at the California State History Day Competition this past weekend. Both will advance to the national competition.
Ericson won in the Junior Division, Individual Performance category. The project was called, “Japanese Internment during World War II.”
Anderson won in the Senior Division, Individual Documentary category. The project was called, “The Rhythm Road: Jazz Diplomacy during the Cold War”
Local History Day competitions started last September at the school level. This year, 221 students from 10 school districts and one charter school competed at the county level in March. The state competition followed April 28-May 1 in San Jose.
The theme this year for History Day was “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.” The entries were judged with three criteria: historical quality, quality of presentation, and adherence to the theme.
