Riverside County Board of Education will fill vacancy by appointment

The Riverside County Board of Education on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, voted to appoint a replacement for Trustee Betty Gibbel, who is retiring effective July 1, rather than call for a special election. The appointee will hold office until the next regularly scheduled Board election in June 2012.

Trustees made their decision after determining that the cost of a special election could reach $328,000.

The Riverside County Board of Education has seven members who serve four-year terms. The Board approves curriculum for schools operated by the Riverside County Office of Education and the budget, hears appeals for interdistrict transfers, expulsions and charter school applications.

Gibbel, elected to the Board in 1976 and now in her ninth term, served Trustee Area 4, which includes the Perris Union, Perris Elementary, Val Verde Unified, Hemet Unified, San Jacinto Unified, Menifee Union, Romoland and Nuview Union school districts.

The Board will accept applications until noon on May 26, 2011.

A qualified candidate must be:

• A California registered voter residing in the boundaries of Trustee Area 4:

• At least 18 years of age

• Not disqualified by the constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office

• Not an employee of the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools or any K-12 public institution in Riverside County (including Charter Schools)
Should any such employee choose to apply and is selected, employment would be terminated upon being sworn in to office.

The Board has scheduled a special meeting at 9 a.m. on June 15 to interview candidates. The Board expects to seat the new Trustee at its July 13 meeting.

Prospective applicants are also invited to attend a Prospective Board Member Orientation at 5 p.m. on May 24 at the Riverside County Office of Education Board Room, 3939 Thirteenth Street, Riverside.
