Riverside County Distinguished Schools, Title I Achievement Award winners honored

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson presented five Riverside County schools with California Distinguished School Awards and 15 with Title I Academic Achievement Awards on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center. The awards ceremony and luncheon were presented by Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Young.

The California Distinguished Schools program focuses on California’s students and their entitlement to an equitable and rigorous education. Under the 2011 program, the California Distinguished School Award identifies and honors those schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap. The program honors middle and high schools this year (elementary schools next year).

The California Distinguished School winners this year included:

La Quinta High School
Desert Sands Unified School District

David A. Brown Middle School
Lake Elsinore Unified School District

Amelia Earhart Middle School
Riverside Unified School District

Matthew Gage Middle School

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), recognizes high-poverty Title I schools that exceed Adequate Yearly Progress for two or more years or significantly close the achievement gap among numerically significant subgroups.

The Title I Academic Achievement Award winners this year include:
