Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenn Young welcomes 250 to Parent and Family Engagement Summit

Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth M. Young Friday (October 28, 2011) welcomed more than 275 participants to the Second Annual Parent and Family Engagement Summit.

Young urged parents to help increase the number of students who apply for federal college financial aid as a way to increase the college going rate for Riverside County.

“We believe we are going to see a significant increase in the number of students going to college” as a result of the drive to have more students apply for federal funding.

The Summit, themed this year as “Together We Build the Future,” was created by the office of the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools in collaboration with the 23rd District PTA, representing PTA members across Riverside County.

Keynote speaker John Antonetti, who lectures nationally on education issues, said that parents can help their children learn by doing something as simple as talking or singing to their children.

“The one indicator of future student success is the amount of empathy they find at home,” he said. “Empathy can mean that you listen. Children need to talk. They need to hear you talk. They look for patterns while you are talking and they learn from those patterns.”

He said parent engagement is more than being involved with children, and involves showing enthusiasm for them and encouraging their learning process.

Highlighting the same point, Ellen Larson, Certified Parent Liaison for the Parent Leadership Initiative of the Riverside County Office of Education, said, “Research shows that student success is greatly influenced by parent engagement.”

Larson and Certified Parent Liaison Mimi Badura led a session on creating action plans to help schools adopt strategies and structures to facilitate involvement by parents.

As part of the Summit, the Moreno Valley Unified School District “District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) was given the Parent and Family Engagement Volunteer Award. Nominators said DELAC worked to build strong schools and strong communities, and was instrumental in creation of a Parent Resource Center in the district.

The breakout sessions during the day included:

Learning at Home: Creating a Home Environment That Supports Student Success; Parent Engagement: The Key to Student Success; Positive Parenting in Public Education: Every Child Needs One Person who is Crazy Them!; Make it Happen!
