Riverside County sends four students to National History Day

Riverside hosted the California State History Day Competition for the first time this past weekend for more than 1,000 students from across the state. Four Riverside County students won the chance to compete in National History Day competition scheduled for June 10-14, 2012, at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The theme of this year's competition is "Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History." The entries were judged with three criteria: historical quality, quality of presentation, and adherence to the theme. The work must be completely done by students.

The winners, categories and projects included:

-- Rachel Priebe, Amelia Earhart Middle School, Riverside Unified School District, Junior Individual Documentary, "Art . . . A Vehicle for Change."

-- Lelah Ericson, Vista Heights Middle School, Moreno Valley Unified School District, Junior Individual Performance, "The Many Banners that Created a Revolution."

-- Emma Cunningham, Poly High School, Riverside Unified School District, Senior Individual Paper, "The Brown Decision: Educational Reforms, Watershed Revolution, Reactionary Backlash."

-- Alexandra Itkis, North High School, Riverside Unified School District, Senior Individual Exhibit, "Russian Revolution of 1917: No Power to the Workers."

Two entries were judged as runners-up and will represent the state at the national competition if any of the top finalists cannot attend:

-- Brooks Ryan, Amelia Earhart Middle School, Riverside Unified School District, Junior Individual Website, "The Manhattan Project: Burning the Candle at Both Ends."

-- Isabella Sanchez, Lauren Estiandan, Lizeth Merino, Mario Garcia, and Miriam Valle, Ramona High School, Riverside Unified School District, Senior Groups Exhibit, "Success or Failure? The Amnesty Act of 1986."

Special Awards were given to:

-- John Drain, Lincoln Alternative School, Corona-Norco Unified School District, the Past, Present, and Future Award, Junior Individual Website, "Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation."

-- Andrea Parra, Santiago High School, Corona-Norco Unified School District, the California Historical Society Award, Senior Individual Paper, "The Stanford Prison Experiment: Solitary Confinement Redefined."

-- Rachel Priebe, Amelia Earhart Middle School, Riverside Unified School District, the Herbert Nikirk Visual Art in History Award, Junior Individual Documentary, "Art . . . A Vehicle for Change."

The "Best in County" awards went to:

-- Aylin Henstridge, Amelia Earhart Middle School, Riverside Unified School District, Junior Individual Documentary, "The Kemalist Revolution and the Creation of Modern Turkey."

-- Cecelia Mackey, Nuview Bridge Early College High School, Nuview Union School District, Senior Individual Exhibit, "The Ludlow Massacre and the Right to Unionize."

Troy Kawahara from Santiago High School, Corona-Norco Unified School District, received a longevity award for being a senior and being at state finals six years.

History Day competitions started in September at the school level. This year, 196 students from 9 school districts and 2 charter schools competed at the county level.
