Nearly 400 educators attend the Tenth Annual Education Summit and Models of Academic Excellence Luncheon

Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Young Thursday (October 25, 2012) welcomed nearly 400 educators to the Tenth Annual Riverside County Educational Summit and Models of Academic Excellence Recognition Luncheon. (Photos from recognition luncheon)

Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, praised the outstanding Riverside County educational programs being recognized at the event. “You are on the cutting edge in Riverside County,” Torlakson said. “These programs combine rigor with excellence, and we know that is a pathway for students to college and careers.”

Young said Riverside County students score better each year on state academic achievement tests, but more needs to be done to help prepare them for college and careers. The programs highlighted during the event have proven successful in improving student achievement and can be replicated countywide, he said.

Young added that Riverside County families are counting on local school districts to educate the county’s 425,000 students no matter how bad the state budget is or whether two measures to raise more money for schools are approved on the November 6 ballot.

“The voters look to us to find solutions at the local level,” Young said. “Education has to be seen as the E ticket out the problems we have in this state.”

Keynote speaker Willard Daggett, CEO of the International Center for Leadership in Education, said not just Riverside County and California, but the nation is looking to schools to train workers that will keep pace with economic competitors like Japan, China and India.

“Education is the key to economic success,” Daggett said, and that puts more pressure on schools to improve faster.

Twenty one successful educational programs were highlighted during the Summit, themed “K-12 College and Career Readiness for the 21st Century.” Each school or district earning a Models of Academic Excellence Award was recognized at a lunchtime ceremony.
