Twenty-Two High School Teams Set to Compete at 34th Annual Riverside County Academic Decathlon

New location for this year’s event at Beaumont High School will feature theme of World War II

BEAUMONT – Twenty-two high school teams will compete in the final round of the 34th Annual Academic Decathlon sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education on Saturday, February 4, at Beaumont High School (39139 Cherry Valley Blvd., Cherry Valley). Statewide, 5,553 students and 2,800 volunteers are involved in Academic Decathlon in 2017 that is featuring a theme of World War II.

The first day of this year’s competition was Saturday, January 28, and featured essay writing, speeches, and interviews. On February 4, teams will compete via written tests in the morning followed by the popular Super Quiz—the only event open to the public (other than the awards ceremony) at 1 p.m. in the Beaumont High School gymnasium.

The awards ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. in the Beaumont High School theater and will include an announcement of the team that will represent Riverside County at the California Academic Decathlon to be held in Sacramento on March 23-26, 2017. The United States Academic Decathlon will be held on April 20-22 in Madison, Wisconsin.

In 2016, Hemet’s West Valley High School emerged victorious at the Riverside County Academic Decathlon. The victory represented West Valley’s seventh championship in 10 years of the competition. Elsinore High School placed second and Corona High School’s Red Team third (see Riverside County historical results at end of press release). At the 2016 California Academic Decathlon, West Valley High School placed 33rd while at-large qualifier Elsinore High School finished 30th overall.

Each team is composed of nine students, three from each grade point category, and includes three Honor (GPA 3.75-4.00), three Scholastic (GPA 3.00-3.74), and three Varsity (GPA 0.00-2.99) students. Students accumulate individual and team points in written events in mathematics, economics, art, music, literature, science, social science, and Super Quiz.
