County Superintendent honors top academic achievers
Mr. Kenneth M. Young, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, named 10 outstanding students to the 2009-2010 All-County Academic Team Wednesday, March 10, during the Fifth Annual Riverside County Academic Awards dinner (photos from the ceremony).
High schools from 17 school districts in the county nominated 131 students for honors based on their academic performance, GPA, SAT scores, and extracurricular activities. Each high school named from one to three students based on their enrollment (complete list of students honored). The All-County Academic Team was chosen from that list.
The members of the All-County Academic Team were accompanied by their principals and superintendents. The team includes:
Jacqueline Braslow – Jacqueline Braslow is a senior at Palm Desert High School in the Desert Sands Unified School District. She scored 2300 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.73, and is ranked sixth in her class. Jacqueline’s activities and honors include: Dance (ballet, jazz, modern); finalist at the 2009 Open Call Talent Competition at McCallum Theater Group, YMCA Youth and Government and selected for 2010 Supreme Court, Mock Trial, Link Crew Freshman Orientation leader, National Honors Society (currently President), Environmental Club president, Academic Decathlon, Indian Cultural Awareness Club, Volleyball, AP Scholar with Distinction, and National Merit Scholar semi-finalist.
Chanel Chang – Chanel Chang is a senior at Chaparral High School in the Temecula Valley Unified School District. She scored 2310 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.42, and is ranked third in her class. Chanel’s activities and honors include: Science Olympiad, Bulletin Editor of Key Club, California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, AP Scholar with Distinction, PSAT/NMSQT letter of commendation, teacher at Young Nak Presbyterian Church Sunday Korean School.
Sebastian Chiu – Sebastian Chiu is a senior at John W. North High School in the Riverside Unified School District. He scored 2310 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.65, and is ranked first in his class. Sebastian’s activities and honors include: National AP Scholar, 12 AP tests with a perfect score of 5 including Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, European History, Chinese, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Physics B, Physics C: Mechanics, Statistics, U.S. History, U.S. Government, National Merit Semi-Finalist, Academic Decathlon, Mock Trial, Interact Club, School Site Council, Math Club, California Scholarship Federation.
Green Choi – Green Choi is a senior at Vista Murrieta High School in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. He scored 2390 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.5 and is ranked first in his class. Green’s activities and honors include: Boy Scouts of America, Tae Kwon Do, Tennis team, California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, Interact Club, Benefit Association of Teens, Helping Out North Koreans, National Merit Scholarship finalist, Eagle Scout award recipient, National AP Scholar, Renaissance Scholar award, Korean American Award of Outstanding Student and Scholarship, Second Degree Black Belt, All Scholastic Team Award, Korea Daily dream essay contest winner.
Andrew Deeds – Andrew Deeds is a senior at Palm Springs High School in the Palm Springs Unified School District. He scored 2350 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.68, and is ranked fourth in his class. Andrew’s activities and honors include: National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Principals Award for Academic Excellence, National Latin Exam – Magna Cum Laude, active in band, Science Fair, finalist on the game show 1 vs. 100 (child genius episode), California Scholarship Federation, Mensa, performed in a series of five concerts for charity at the McCallum Theater with Barry Manilow.
Nicole Hwang – Nicole Hwang is a senior at Santiago High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. She scored 2280 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.67, and is ranked fourth in her class. Nicole’s activities and honors include: Future Business Leaders of America Chapter President and Regional Historian, Model United Nations President and Founder, Pacific Asian Club President, varsity tennis player, intern reporter for Joong Ang Daily (Korean publication), Riverside Youth Court main defense attorney, volunteer at Corona Senior Center, completion of six Advanced Placement classes and currently enrolled in five AP classes this year.
Ketaki Panse – Ketaki Panse is a senior at Hemet High School in the Hemet Unified School District. She scored 2370 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.6, and is ranked first in her class. Ketaki’s activities and honors include: Mock Trial, Symphonic Band, Interact Club member and treasurer, Link Crew member, Future College Graduates Club member, Mandir Youth Club president, Varsity tennis team captain, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards recipient, AP National Scholar, Sunbelt Tennis league MVP, National Honor Society, Science Fair, California Math League school’s top scorer.
James Roose – James Roose is a senior at John W. North High School in the Riverside Unified School District. He scored 2370 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.6, and is ranked second in his class. James’ activities and honors include: Varsity Soccer, Science Honor Society, Interact Community Service Club, IB Diploma candidate, National Merit Semi-Finalist (Finalist pending), AP Scholar with Distinction, score of 5 on AP tests for Calculus AB, Macroeconomics, Physics B, U.S. History, European History, foreign exchange student to Japan the summer of 2008.
Pablo Wudka-Robles – Pablo Wudka-Robles is a senior at Polytechnic High School in the Riverside Unified School District. He scored 2370 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.5, and is ranked second in his class. Pablo’s activities and honors include: Mock Trial which includes receiving the best defense attorney and outstanding prosecution attorney awards, National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, History Day state finalist, Boys’ State Delegate, Bear Tracks Literary Magazine page editor, Poly Spotlight copy editor, AP Scholar with Honors, Piano certificate of merit level 9.
Nicole Xu – Nicole Xu is a senior at John W. North High School in the Riverside Unified School District. She scored 2330 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.52, and is ranked fourth in her class. Nicole’s activities and honors include: Octagon Club President, newspaper editor-in-chief, Junior Optimist Octagon International Club District Governor, Interact Club, Polaris Literacy Magazine Executive Editor, California Scholarship Federation, AP Ambassador tutor, Science Honors Society, AP Scholar with Distinction Award, PSAT/NMSQT Semifinalist, MTCA Certificate of Merit Piano level advanced.
