County Superintendent honors top academic achievers
Dr. David Long, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, named the 10 members of the All-County Academic Team Wednesday (March 8) during the First Annual Superintendents Academic Awards Banquet (video).
“This was an opportunity to celebrate achievement and commitment as reflected by Riverside County’s finest students,” Long said.
The team was named during the First Annual Riverside County Superintendents’ Academic Awards Banquet. High schools from the county’s 23 school districts selected 117 students based on their academic performance, GPA, SAT scores, and extracurricular activities (list of all honorees). Each high school named from one to three students based on their enrollment.
Austin Weiss from Palm Desert High School returned for his second year as the captain of the All-County Academic Team, which includes:
Risha Bera is a senior at Centennial High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. (Principal is Sam Buenrostro.) She has a GPA of 4.77, scored 2300 on her SAT, is ranked first in her class, and has finished several college courses. Risha is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. She is a National Merit Scholarship finalist. She has served as the president or vice-president of numerous organizations, including International Baccalaureate Student Association, California Scholarship Federation, and the Indian Students Union. Having won at both local and regional levels, she competed at the State Science Fair in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 and at the State History Day competition in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
Spencer Eldred is a senior at Palm Desert High School in the Desert Sands Unified School District. (Principal is Patrick Walsh.) He has a GPA of 5.17, scored 2180 on his SAT, is ranked first in his class, and has completed several college courses at various institutions. Eldred’s accomplishments are varied: He has written and published a novel. He was awarded Maxima Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam for two years. He is president of the California Scholarship Federation. And, he is doing an internship for Congresswoman Mary Bono. In addition to all of this, Spencer has been heavily involved in community service having donated hundreds of hours of his time to different organizations.
Laura Huang is a senior at Polytechnic High School in the Riverside Unified School District. (Principal is Frank Paredes.) She has a GPA of 4.53, scored 2230 on her SAT, and is ranked second in her class. Some of her accomplishments in the arts include being the content/layout editor for her school literary magazine and a performer in the Music Teacher’s Association of California Certificate of Merit Honors Recital. In addition, Laura was a National History Day State Finalist. In addition to being an extraordinary student, Laura is a member of her school’s varsity tennis team and has received five Scholar Athlete Awards in the past four years.
Christopher Kim is a senior at Centennial High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. (Principal is Sam Buenrostro.) He has a GPA of 4.75, scored 2150 on his SAT, and is ranked second in his class. Christopher is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. He is a National Merit Finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and was a Boys State Delegate. He is also an accomplished pianist. In addition to being an extraordinary student, Christopher is a member of his school’s varsity Track and Field and Cross Country teams. He also works with the Red Cross and is currently the blood-drive commissioner.
Joseph Kleindienst is a senior at Palm Springs High School in the Palm Springs Unified School District. (Principal is Ricky Wright.) He has a GPA of 4.71, scored 2190 on his SAT, and is ranked second in his class. Joseph has been active in student government, including two years as class president. He was awarded Magna Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam and Excellence in Foreign Language Studies. In addition, Joseph was a Boys State Delegate. He would like to pursue a degree in the engineering field. In addition to being an extraordinary student, Joseph is a member of his school’s varsity tennis team.
Natalya Kostandova is a senior at John W. North High School in the Riverside Unified School District. (Principal is Dale Kinnear.) She has a GPA of 4.55, scored 2310 on her SAT, and is ranked first in her class. Natalya is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. She has been president of the math club, and as a member of the chess club, she won the school, the city, and the district tournaments. She was involved in a biological research project at UCR and, having won at both district and regional fairs, has gone to the California State Science Fair four years. In addition to all of his, Natalya is an accomplished musician and is a member of her school’s varsity Cross-Country, and Track and Field teams.
Tiffany Mathias is a senior at Hemet High School in the Hemet Unified School District. (Principal is Bill Black.) She has a GPA of 4.53, scored 2210 on her SAT, and is ranked second in her class. Tiffany is vice-president of the National Honor Society. She has been successful in Academic Decathlon, Mock Trial, and Math League. She was the Kushimoto Exchange Program Chairperson and co-hosted the Fine Arts Assembly. In addition to being an extraordinary student, Tiffany is a member of her school’s varsity volleyball team.
Ashish Rastogi is a senior at Hemet High School in the Hemet Unified School District. (Principal is Bill Black.) He has a GPA of 4.55, scored 2240 on his SAT, and is ranked first in his class. Ashish is active in Key Club, Interact Club, Math Club, and National Honor Society. He has been a presenter at Hemet City’s 9/11 Memorial Day Ceremony and the Riverside National Memorial Day Ceremony. He works for the Hemet Heart Medical Center. In addition to being an extraordinary student, Ashish is a member of his school’s varsity tennis team.
Austin Weiss is a senior at Palm Desert High School in the Desert Sands Unified School District. (Principal is Patrick Walsh.) He has a GPA of 5.07, scored a perfect 2400 on his SAT, and is ranked second in his class. Austin was a member and captain of the 2004-2005 All-County Academic Team. A few of Austin’s remarkable accomplishments include his receiving a “5” on a practice AP Biology exam before taking the class and his role as DSUSD Student School Board Member. He received the Exemplary Mathematics Achievement Award from the California Department of Education and the California Mathematics Council and the Harvard Prize Book from the Harvard Alumni Association. He was a finalist in the Spanish Essay contest sponsored by the Spanish Office of Education at the Spanish consulate, and he qualified to take the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam. He attended Boys’ State in Sacramento and Explorations in Genetics and Molecular Biology at Columbia University.
Margaret Yeomans is a senior at La Quinta High School in the Desert Sands Unified School District. (Principal is Donna Salazar.) She has a GPA of 4.95, scored 2190 on her SAT, and is ranked first in her class. Margaret is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. She has been nominated for the Bank of America Scholarship in Liberal Arts. Margaret plans on attending a four-year university where she will study theatre and already has an impressive list of awards in theatre arts, including, but not limited to the following: She won a gold medal with distinction for solo acting from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. She was a semi-finalist with English Speaking Union. She won 1 st place in Contemporary Monologues at Role About Theatre Festival. She earned a California State Thespian Scholarship. And, she earned a Certificate with Merit in classical ballet from the Royal Academy of Dance. Margaret has donated over 150 hours of community service to various organizations.
