Celebrating Educators Luncheon held (online video)

The 2006 Riverside County Administrators, Principals, and Classified and Confidential Staff Members of the Year have been announced by the Riverside County Office of Education.

The honorees, along with the 2006 Riverside County Teachers of the Year and inductees to the Hall of Fame, were recognized at the Celebrating Educators Luncheon on May 16 at the Riverside Convention Center. (online video)

The Hall of Fame winners were recently announced (April, 2006). Winners were chosen after a paper screening, interview, and site visit process. They include:

Administrator of the Year (Certificated):
Nancy M. Divine, Area Administrator
Hemet Unified School District

Administrator of the Year (Classified):
Peggy Reyes, Director
Desert Sands Unified School District

Principal of the Year:
Nelda Esmeralda, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School
Desert Sands Unified School District

Principal of the Year:
David Hansen, Arlington High School
Riverside Unified School District

Confidential Staff Member of the Year:
Sue Holmes, Executive Secretary II
Riverside Unified School District

Classified Staff Member of the Year:
Mary Ann Sherman, K-6 Librarian, Jefferson Elementary School
Corona-Norco Unified School District

Teacher of the Year:
Mercedes Alou-Hicks, Palm Desert High School
Desert Sands Unified School District

Teacher of the Year:
Shelbi J. Wilson, Abraham Lincoln High School
Riverside Unified School District

Teacher of the Year:
Daniel Glenn Fountaine, Matthew Gage Middle School
Riverside Unified School District

The Celebrating Educators Luncheon is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, Altura Credit Union, and Life Touch Prestige Portraits in recognition of the county’s outstanding educators. Nominees in all categories from school districts throughout the county will be honored. The county level winners will be featured.

Candidate notes:

Nancy M. Divine is an Area Administrator for the Hemet Unified School District. She has been in education for 29 years, 18 years as an administrator. She is a member of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Association of Female Executives, National Staff Development Council, and Life Member of National Education Association. Nominators said, “Nancy has earned the universal respect of our Board, staff, students, and community for her contributions to our district and our community as one of the very best educational leaders this district has ever had. She is a person of unquestioned integrity.”

Peggy Reyes is a Director in the Desert Sands Unified School District. She has been in education for 30 years and a director for 15. She is a member of the California Association for School Business Officials (CASBO), Desert Sands Unified School District Insurance Committee, Desert Sands Unified School District United Way Steering Committee, and 1984-85 CSEA Employee of the Year. She has been responsible for the capital projects of over $900 million annually. During her tenure, eight elementary schools and one middle school have been completed. Nominators said, “Peggy is a key employee in the district whose opinions can be trusted and who can be counted on to represent us well. She is highly ethical, professional, and is well respected by her co-workers.”

Nelda Esmeralda is an Elementary School Principal at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School for the Desert Sands Unified School District. She has been in education for 27 years and a principal for 16. She has been a member of the Sigma Nu Parent’s Club, Desert Sands Unified School District Strategic Planning Committee, Desert Sands Unified School District Master Plan for English Learner, Regional Access Project Foundation, Riverside County Blue Ribbon Committee/RAP, and La Quinta Arts Foundation. Nominators said, “When we think of school principals who actually implement ideals, Nelda definitely is one of them. She has a clear and focused vision for the school; high expectations for staff and student performance; and collaborative leadership focused on instruction.”

David Hansen is a principal at Arlington High School for the Riverside Unified School District. He has been in education for 17 years and a principal for seven and a half. He is a member of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce, and local commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. Nominators said “he is a true instructional leader who inspires others to high levels of performance, commitment and motivation. His passion for what he does shines through as he fearlessly pursues personal excellence. His courage to lead is unparalleled; his performance as a principal is extraordinary.”

Sue Holmes is an Executive Secretary for the Riverside Unified School District. She has worked in education for 22 years. She is a member of the Riverside Association of Schools’ Managers (RASM) and School Site Council. Throughout her career, Sue has assisted parents in finding the right resources to help their children get back on track to finish their education. She treats all parents, students, and staff with dignity and respect. Nominators said, “I see warmth, concern for students and staff, and professionalism as I watch Sue meet the challenges of her job everyday.”

Mary Ann Sherman is a K-6 Librarian at Jefferson Elementary School for the Corona-Norco Unified School District. She has worked in education for 18 years, 16 of those at her current work site. She has been a member of the PTA for 28 years, three years as president, School Site Council for ten years, and Corona-Norco Unified School District Library Planning Committee for six years. Mary has influenced and motivated countless students go on to college and achieve their goals. As a result of her efforts, students have been exposed to the wonders of fine arts, a love of reading, and a desire for learning. Mary Ann is a true advocate for children.
