David Long honored for safety work
Dr. David Long, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, has been honored by a group promoting safety measures for young people involved in sports.
Mike Lewis, from the Sports Activities Furthering Education to Today’s Youth (SAFETY), presented Dr. Long with a plaque May 17 at a meeting of the Riverside County Board of Education in Murrieta.
Lewis, a former professional motorcycle racer, and Tim Hodges from SAFETY said they became involved in helping local youth through the Community Action Planning program created by Dr. Long when he was the Lake Elsinore Unified School District superintendent.
The group now sponsors safety programs at dozens of local schools urging young people who ride motorcycles to wear the proper safety gear and riding at approved tracks with safety precautions in place.
Lewis said Dr. Long was instrumental in getting their group started and has supported their efforts, including participating at events and lending other support.
A high percentage of young people in Southwest Riverside County ride motorcycles, Lewis said. There has been an upswing in injuries and fatalities, he said.
