State schools chief visits RCOE to discuss high school exit exam (online video)
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell visited the Riverside County Office of Education Friday, June 2, to discuss the implementation of the California High School Exit Exam (online video).
O’Connell called the exam an important part of the accountability process for high school seniors. The exam had been placed on hold by a Superior Court judge and then reinstated at the urging of O’Connell by the California Supreme Court.
An appellate court has set a hearing after June graduations for the Class of 2006.
“I am pleased with the actions of the California Supreme Court and appellate court,” O’Connell said. “I believe the exit exam is here to stay.”
O’Connell said that more than 90 percent of seniors have passed the test. For the rest, he urged them to attend a fifth year of high school, summer school or community college to continue their educations.
