PTA Membership Month, September 2006
The Riverside County Board of Supervisors on August 29 proclaimed September as PTA Membership Month.
The proclamation honored the 6.5 million members in 26,000 PTA chapters nationwide. Locally, there are 260 unit (school site) PTA’s within 11 council (school district) PTA’s in the 23rd District, representing 81,000 PTA/PTSA members in Riverside County.
Supervisors cited studies that students do better in school when parents are involved. The results show higher grades, improved test scores, higher self-esteem, and increased attendance.
Proceeds from membership fees and fundraising events support school-based programs, educational and social events, and parent education and leadership training.
One of the most important benefits of PTA/PTSA is that involved parents understand the challenges schools face and become part of the solution.
Attending the meeting were 23rd District PTA Vice President Tammie Blackmore, Membership Director Janis Russo, President Diane Bynum, Temecula Council PTA Public Relations Chairman Barbara Burkett, Communications Director Cindy Holmes, Temecula Council PTA President Susan Elliott.
