Hemet High School has finished in first place for the ninth time in the Riverside County Academic Decathlon. Teams were honored Wednesday (February 7) in Moreno Valley.

Second-place honors went to West Valley High School and third to Beaumont High School Blue.

Hemet High School will take its team to Los Angeles March 15-18 for the State Academic Decathlon. The national competition is April 25-28 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The theme this year is “China and Its Influence on the World.”

The Academic Decathlon is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education.

Students from grades nine through twelve competed as individuals and as team members in a series of ten academic tests and demonstrations. Twenty-two teams took part in the Riverside County competition this year.

Each team is composed of nine students, three from each grade point category, and includes three Honor (GPA 3.75 – 4.00), three Scholastic (GPA 3.00 – 3.75), and three Varsity (GPA 0.00 – 2.99) students. Students accumulate individual and team points in written events in mathematics, economics, art, music, language/literature and science. Decathletes must also write an essay, participate in a panel interview, and give prepared and impromptu speeches.

The first day of competition included the speech and interviews. The second day featured academic testing, essay writing, and the Super Quiz.

West Valley High School (Hemet) won the Super Quiz, Hemet High School finished second, and La Sierra High School and Beaumont High School Blue tied for third.
