Head Start volunteer wins statewide award
An 86-year-old Head Start volunteer from Corona has been named the Friend of the Year by the California Head Start Association.
Warren Wilson will be honored February 1 during the California Head Start Association Ninth Annual Conference in Newport Beach.
Wilson, originally from Iowa, has assisted the Home Gardens, Garretson, Jefferson and RCC Norco Head Start sites for the past 10 years. He has raised thousands of dollars to buy books that he gives to Head Start children.
He organized “Terrific Kids,” a group of high school students that volunteer to read to Head Start children once a week. And he brings other senior citizens to Head Start sites to read to children.
Wilson has also collaborated with the RCC Norco College Early Childhood Literacy instructors to read to Head Start children and donated books.
He is active with the Day of the Child, Cops and Kids, and First Book programs. He is a member of the Corona Kiwanis. Head Start instructors said that Wilson is a dedicated volunteer, who recently had to spend several days in the hospital and spent the time soliciting donations from other patients for more books for children.
Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. Head Start centers are administered by the Riverside County Office of Education.
