County Superintendent honors top academic achievers
Dr. David Long, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, named 15 outstanding students to the 2007 All-County Academic Team today (Wednesday, March 14, 2007) during the Second Annual Superintendents’ Academic Awards Banquet.
High schools from the county’s 23 school districts selected 121 students for honors based on their academic performance, GPA, SAT scores, and extracurricular activities. Each high school named from one to three students based on their enrollment (complete list of students honored). The All-County Academic Team was chosen from that list.
The members of the All-County Academic Team were accompanied by their principals and superintendents. The team included:
Nick Altemose (Co-Captain) is a senior at Chaparral High School in the Temecula Valley Unified School District. (Principal is Dan Kenley.) He scored a perfect 2400 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.65, and is ranked first in his class. His activities and honors include: Science Olympiad, Varsity Swim, National Honor Society, Peer Leaders Tutor, Youth and Government, National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, National Hispanic Achievement Award, National AP Scholar, and has won 12 Science Olympiad Medals.
Joseph Paul Antonios is a senior at Centennial High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. (Principal is Sam Buenrostro.) He scored 2250 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.74, and is ranked first in his class. His activities and honors include: Math Club, International Baccalaureate Program Diploma Candidate, National AP Scholar, Scored 5 on the following AP Tests Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, European History, Physics B, English Language, and U.S. History, National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, Completed Advanced Level of California Certificate of Merit in Piano (12 years of piano study), and is a member and competitor in MESA (Math, Engineering, and Science Association).
Garret Blanchette is a senior at Palm Springs High School in the Palm Springs Unified School District. (Principal is Ricky Wright.) He scored 2220 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.74, and is ranked second in his class. His activities and honors include: National Latin Exam Cum Laude (2004, 2005, 2006), Varsity Cross Country, Principals Award for Outstanding Academic Performance Every Semester, AP Scholar With Distinction, Founder and President of Palm Springs High School Debate Club, California Scholarship Federation, School Site Council, and was a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student of 2006.
Daniel Choi is a senior at Vista Murrieta High School in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. (Principal is Darren Daniel.) He scored 2200 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.35, and is ranked first in his class. His activities and honors include: National Honor Society, Varsity Tennis, Interact Club, Link Crew, California Scholarship Federation, Academic Decathlon, National Merit Scholar Quarterfinalist, Renaissance Academic Achievement Award for 4.0 GPA Each Year, AP Scholar With Distinction, Varsity Letter, and has completed more than 300 hours of community service.
Marie Forney is a senior at Murrieta Valley High School in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. (Principal is Renate Jefferson.) She scored 2210 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.33, and is ranked second in her class. Her activities and honors include: Elementary School Classroom Aid and Tutor, Private Flute Instructor, Interact Club, AP Club, California Scholarship Federation, Student Venture Bible Study Club Member, Svetlanas Dance Academy Ballet Student Level VI, and is a Soloist and Corps Dancer for the Inland Valley Classical Ballet Theater.
Zachary Fuller is a senior at Chaparral High School in the Temecula Valley Unified School District. (Principal is Dan Kenley.) He scored 2200 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.46, and is ranked second in his class. His activities and honors include: President of Youth and Government Delegation, Varsity Golf, Peer Leader Member, National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, and is an AP Scholar With Honors.
Kelsy Greenwald is a senior at Palm Springs High School in the Palm Springs Unified School District. (Principal is Ricky Wright.) She scored 2310 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.81, and is ranked first in her class. Her activities and honors include: National AP Scholar, AP Scholar With Distinction, California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer, Girls State California Delegate, Varsity Soccer, Varsity Track, Co-CEO of LBKG Enterprises, Inc. (which developed interactive software in English and Spanish to assist physicians and patients in interpreting the risk of osteoporosis fractures), Founding Board Member for Desert Foundation of Academics (non-profit dedicated to raising funds for academic programs for CVUSD), co-written three medical publications, and has presented five research presentations at national meetings.
Antony Jan (Co-Captain) is a senior at Beaumont High School in the Beaumont Unified School District. (Principal is Marilyn Saucedo.) He scored a perfect 2400 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.37, and is ranked first in his class. His activities and honors include: Varsity Golf, Accomplished Pianist, Academic Decathlon (won 11 medals in 2006 and 2 medals in 2005, was the Top Overall Individual Winner in not only the Honors Division, but all divisions in 2006), Scored 5 on the following AP Tests Calculus AB, English Language, U.S. History, Chemistry, and Physics B, National Society of High School Scholars, California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, Outstanding Student of America, and has volunteered over 200 hours at the public library.
Anh Lê is a senior at Palm Springs High School in the Palm Springs Unified School District. (Principal is Ricky Wright.) She scored 2240 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.73, and is ranked third in her class. Her activities and honors include: Mock Trial, National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, AP Scholar, Accomplished Pianist, Junior State of America, Academic Decathlon Essay Gold Medalist and Interview Bronze Medalist in 2006, Varsity Soccer, AP Scholar With Distinction, California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer, and is a National Latin Exam Silver Medalist.
Julia Love is a senior at Vista Murrieta High School in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. (Principal is Darren Daniel.) She scored 2230 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.22, and is ranked third in her class. Her activities and honors include: National Honors Society, California Scholarship Federation, Founding Editor-in-Chief of Student Newspaper, Marching and Concert Band, California Scholarship Federation, Interact Club, 1st Clarinet/All Valley Honor Band, Founding Member of Murrietas Youth Advisory Committee, Paid Correspondent for The Press-Enterprise, AP Scholar With Honors, and has completed over 150 hours of community service.
Clifford Maxwell is a senior at Santiago High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. (Principal is Ruperto Cisneros.) He scored 2200 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.64, and is ranked third in his class. His activities and honors include: Mock Trial, National Honors Society, Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout, Varsity Football, Junior State of America, Link Crew Leader, National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and is a Golden Boys State Delegate.
Kavi Patel is a senior at Centennial High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. (Principal is Sam Buenrostro.) He scored 2200 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.71, and is ranked third in his class. His activities and honors include: Anti-Tobacco Legislative Advocacy, Vice-President and Co-Founder of School UNICEF Club, Chairman of American Cancer Society Youth Council, Studied Classical Indian Music and Plays Tabla (Indian Drum), Active Red Cross Member, National Merit Scholar Candidate, National AP Scholar With Honors, and has volunteered at the hospital for two years.
Adam Setzler is a senior at Martin Luther King High School in the Riverside Unified School District. (Principal is Daniel Brooks.) He scored 2200 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.32, and is ranked second in his class. His activities and honors include: National Merit Commended Scholar, AP Scholar, Varsity Football, First Team All-Ivy League and All-Academic Team Ivy League (Football), Church Youth Group and Choir, and has done mission trips to Mexico to build houses and other community service projects.
Hemali Thakkar is a senior at Santiago High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. (Principal is Ruperto Cisneros.) She scored 2240 on her SAT, has a GPA of 4.69, and is ranked first in her class. Her activities and honors include: National Merit Scholar Finalist, Girls State Candidate, AP Scholar With Distinction, Marching and Concert Band, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honors Society, California Scholarship Federation, Key Club, and has organized two mock elections on campus on real election days.
Bryan Zavestoski is a senior at Murrieta Valley High School in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. (Principal is Renate Jefferson.) He scored 2220 on his SAT, has a GPA of 4.33, and is ranked first in his class. His activities and honors include: Marching Band, Concert Band, California Scholarship Federation, National Merit Scholar Commended Student, AP Scholar With Distinction, Vacation Bible School Group Leader, and received a Certificate of Merit for proficiency in playing piano from the Music Teachers Association of California.
