County educators selected for outstanding contributions
The 2007 Riverside County Administrators, Principal, and Classified and Confidential Staff Members of the Year have been announced by the Riverside County Office of Education.
The honorees, along with the 2006 Riverside County Teachers of the Year and inductees to the Hall of Fame, were recognized at the Celebrating Educators Luncheon on May 8 at the Riverside Convention Center.
The 2006 Riverside County Teachers of the Year were selected last June. The Hall of Fame winners were announced in March. Educators being honored were chosen after a paper screening, interview, and site visit process. They include:

The Celebrating Educators Luncheon is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, Altura Credit Union, and Life Touch Prestige Portraits in recognition of the county’s outstanding educators. Nominees in all categories from school districts throughout the county will be honored. The county level winners will be featured.
CANDIDATE NOTES:
Patricia L. Chandler is the Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, for Moreno Valley Unified School District. She has been an administrator for six years and worked in education for nearly 40 years. She has been a teacher, counselor, assistant principal and director of curriculum prior to her current assignment. She is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Association of California School Administrators, and on the National Council of Staff Development. Nominators said “she approaches all challenges as opportunities for learning for both the students and staff . . . she embodies the spirit of optimism.”
John S. Gildner is the Manager of Graphic Services for the Desert Sands Unified School District. He has been an administrator for eight years with the school district. He is a member of the California Association of Business Officials (CASBO), a volunteer for United Way of the Desert, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Community Blood Bank. Nominators said Gildner “absolutely understands and models full support for each student’s achievement through his leadership and service in Graphic Services . . . he leaves no detail to chance.”
Lynn Brickman is Principal of San Jacinto Elementary School in the San Jacinto Unified School District. She has been a principal for eight years, and worked in education 26 years. She has been a teacher in high school and Adult Education, and is an adjunct instructor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She is a member of Association of California School Administrators, is a former Chair of Historic Preservation Committee in Escondido, Founder of Children’s Museum, and Chair of the March of Dimes WalkAmerica in San Diego County. Nominators said she “has worked hard over the last eight years to make this school a place where kids want to be, a place where parents feel welcome, and a place that we all can be proud of . . . she is relentless in her vision that all children will be successful.”
Mary Dean Lohman is an Administrative Assistant, Personnel Services, in the San Jacinto Unified School District. She has been a confidential staff member for nearly 26 years, all of them at her current district. She is a member of the Riverside County Association of Educational Office Professionals, and the Exchangettes (sister club to the Exchange Club). She is a former board member for Hemet Little League, AYSO Soccer, Hemet High School Swim Team and PTA. Nominators said her “dedication and ability to integrate new employees into the San Jacinto Unified School District family is legendary . . . even when things are stressful, she remains calm.”
Laura L. Klingensmith (Lori) is an Administrative Assistant at Andrew Jackson Elementary School in the Desert Sands Unified School District. She has been a classified staff member of 14 years, 12 at her current site. She has worked in education for 16 years. She is Associate Director, Foundation for Diabetes Education, a member of the California School Employees Association, a CSEA Education Committee Chairperson, CSEA Regional Representative, and CSEA Executive Board member. She is an American Red Cross volunteer, American Heart Association trainer, and Desert Regional Medical Center Hospice volunteer. Nominators said she “continues to dedicate her time and energy to helping members of the community . . . she is always ready to assist staff in ways that keep their focus on teaching.”
Patricia Ann Carratello teaches sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at the Idyllwild School in the Hemet Unified School District. She has been teaching a total of 29 years, including 15 at her current site. She received her bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton, and her master’s degree in education from California State University, Los Angeles. She has won a Golden Apple Award, the site and district Teacher of the Year awards. Nominators said, “The staff at Idyllwild School enjoys, respects and appreciates Patty . . . (she) is a gifted teacher who touches the heart and spirit of all students.”
Jackie Martin teaches ninth-graders in a transition class for severely handicapped students at Corona High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. She has been a teacher for 32 years, nine of them at her current site. She received her bachelor’s degree from California State College, Stanislaus, and her master’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles. Nominators said she “is passionate about her career . . . In her assignment as a teacher for severely handicapped children, she is often faced with challenges and obstacles that most educators never experience. She not only accepts this position, she appears to cherish it.”
Karen E. Staples teaches first- through third-graders in a special education class at La Granada Elementary School in the Alvord Unified School District. She has been a teacher for 28 years, 12 at her current site. She received her bachelor’s degree from Middle East University (Loma Linda University) and her master’s degree from Michigan State University. Nominators said she “demonstrates a dedication to teaching each and every day . . . She is aware of the special needs of each and every student in her classroom.
