History Day winners announced
Winners of the 2009 History Day competition were announced March 21, 2009, in ceremonies at Corona High School. (Photos from ceremony.)
First and second place finishers in the 4th and 5th grade poster contest, and Junior division (all categories), will compete at California State History Day April 30-May 3, 2009, in Sacramento. First, second, and third place finishers in Senior division (all categories) will compete at the state level.
More than 3,000 students participated in competitions starting in September at the school district level. This year, 250 students competed at the county level.
The theme this year was “The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.” The entries are judged with three criteria: historical quality, quality of presentation, and adherence to the theme. The work must be completely done by students.
From History Day students gain not only an appreciation of history, but skills in reading, writing, researching, interviewing, speaking, analyzing, and working with others. The use of primary sources and a balanced presentation representing all sides of an issue allow for an unbiased view of history. History Day is easily integrated into a curriculum emphasizing literacy and provides an opportunity for students to be active participants in their learning.
