Riverside County students shine at State History Day Nine advance to Nationals

Riverside County advanced 94 students to the California State History Day Finals in Sacramento May 1-3, 2009.  Students from the county advanced to the final round in almost every category of the competition.  At the awards ceremony on Sunday, May 3, 14 entries received medals, with 9 entries advancing to the National History Day competition to be held June 14-18, 2009, at the University of Maryland.

The award winning students and entries include:

Jason Ablott, Vista Heights Middle School, Moreno Valley USD – advancing to the national competition in the Junior Individual Exhibit category

Elizabeth Brandon and Holly Everson, Earhart Middle School, Riverside USD – advancing to the national competition in the Junior Group Exhibit category

Siegen McKellar, El Cerrito Middle School, Corona-Norco USD – advancing to the national competition in the Junior Individual Documentary category

Loren Newton, Villegas Middle School, Alvord USD – runner up (alternate) in the Junior Individual Documentary category

Osten Anderson, Earhart Middle School, Riverside USD – advancing to the national competition in the Junior Individual Website category

John Ibrahim, Poly High School, Riverside USD – advancing to the national competition in the Senior Historical Paper category

Andrea Canales, Poly High School, Riverside USD – advancing to the national competition in the Senior Individual Exhibit category

Sharlyn Nelson, Norco High School, Corona-Norco USD – advancing to the national competition in the Senior Individual Exhibit category

Brad Smith, Melanie Miles, Samantha Miles, Joseph Bagdanov and Briana Monson, Grace Preparatory School – runner up (alternate) in the Senior Group Performance category

Emily Pavela, John F. Kennedy Middle College High School, Corona-Norco USD – runner up (alternate) in the Senior Individual Documentary category

Jasper Bernbaum, Ryan Homme, and David Hong, Poly High School, Riverside USD – advancing to the national competition in the Senior Group Documentary category

Troy Kawahara, Santiago High School, Corona-Norco USD – advancing to the national competition in the Senior Individual Website category

Pedro Raya, Rosa Zerineno, Marilu Miranda, and Kiara Felix, Coachella Valley High School, Coachella Valley USD – second place in the Senior Group Website category

Stephanie Castellon, Danielle Delgado, and Kadirah Mubashshir, Poly High School, Riverside USD – runner up (alternate) in the Senior Group Website category

In addition, the following students received special awards provided by various organizations:

Audrianna Chastain, Corona-Norco USD

Deonah Shavifi-Cendejas, Moreno Valley USD

Two county students received the perseverance awards for their participation at the California State History Day level for seven years in a row:

Melainie Miles, Grace Preparatory School

In addition, JoAnn Gillespie, teacher from Moreno Valley Unified School District, received the distinguished Educator of Merit award.
