Riverside County students advance to National History Day

Riverside County advanced over 40 entries to the California State History Day Finals in Pasadena May 6-9, 2010, and of those entries, four will now advance to the National History Day Competition to be held June 13-17, 2010, in Maryland.

The award winning students and entries include:

Brett Shearer, Vista Heights Middle School, Moreno Valley USD, advancing to the national competition in the Jr Individual Exhibit category:  "Portland Cement: Impacting Construction."

Holly Everson, Earhart Middle School, Riverside USD, advancing to the national competition in the Jr Individual Exhibit category: "Discovering the Mysterious Depths with ROVs."

David Fuller, Dominic Hernandez, Michael Kasbar, Steven Morua, & Michael Smith, Vista Heights Middle School, Moreno Valley USD, advancing to the national competition in the Jr Group Performance category: "Seriously Sesame Street: Education Innovation."
 
Samantha Miles, Joshua Miles, & Miranda Miles, Private School, advancing to the national competition in the Sr Group Performance category: "Going Up! First Floor - Inventions! Second Floor - Innovations!"

Three entries received Alternate (runner up) awards

Krista Zwart & Binita Patel, Earhart Middle School, Riverside USD, alternate in the  Junior Group Website category: "Needle to Pixel: Innovation of the Compass to GPS."
 
Aileen Fletcher, North High School, Riverside USD, alternate in the  Senior Individual Performance category: "The MMR Vaccine: Injecting Impact and Change."
 
Deonah Sharifi-Cendejas, Brandon Diaz, & Shawna Matsusaka, Valley View HS, Moreno Valley USD, alternate in the Sr Group Performance category: "The Innovation of the United States Constitution: Impact and Change."

In addition, the following received special awards:

Kudos for Kids Award - Troy Kawahara, Santiago High School, Corona-Norco USD.

Children's Voice Award - Samantha Lewis, Poly High School, Riverside USD.

Children's Voice Award - David Fuller, Dominic Hernandez, Michael Kasbar, Steven Morua, & Michael Smith, Vista Heights Middle School, Moreno Valley USD.

Geographical Excellence Award - Aylin Henstridge, Tomas Rivera Elementary School, Riverside USD.
