Temecula wins Mock Trial Competition
Temecula Valley High School finished ahead of the team from Murrieta Valley High School on Saturday, March 1, 2008, to win the final round of the 2008 Riverside County Mock Trial competition.
The final round was held at the Riverside Historic Courthouse. The 26 teams began preparing for the competition in October with more than 400 students involved in regional competitions in February.
Temecula last won the county competition in 1998. Murrieta placed second in 2007, and this year Riverside's Woodcrest Christian High School and Hemet High School took third place honors (team photos).
The Riverside County Bar Association and Riverside County Office of Education each donated $1,000 to the winning team, which will participate in the state competition back in Riverside March 28-30.
Individual honors were awarded on Saturday, February 23, 2008 (press release).
The fictional case this year involved a Hollywood murder mystery, People v. Alex Palmer. A wealthy movie producer is found dead, shot with a black-powder gun used as a movie prop. A writer living on the victim’s estate is accused of the crime.
Mock Trial is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education and the Riverside County Bar Association. Teachers, attorneys and judicial officers have mentored teams during the past five months as students have prepared for pretrial motions, opening statements, questioning of witnesses, cross examination and closing arguments. Teachers, attorneys, parents and judicial officers have volunteered hundreds of hours in preparation for the Mock Trial competition.
On competition days, Riverside County judicial officers preside in each courtroom of the Riverside County Hall of Justice. Volunteer attorneys will score each student’s performance according to a strict formula for an accumulated team score.
