Poly High Wins Mock Trial

Riverside Poly High School won the 2009 Riverside County Mock Trial competition Saturday, March 7, at the Historic Courthouse in Riverside. Poly had not won the event since 2005, when it finished a consecutive streak of four Mock Trial wins.

Hemet High School finished second and Temecula’s Great Oak High School and Riverside’s Woodcrest Christian shared third place honors. (Team photos | photos from awards ceremony)

Mock Trial involves students arguing cases in front of real judges and scored by real attorneys. The case this year is People v. Lane, an arson case. The event is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, Riverside County Bar Association, and Riverside Superior Court.

The Semi-Final Round included Riverside Poly High School (Riverside Unified) vs. Woodcrest Christian, Hemet High School (Hemet Unified) vs. Great Oak High School (Temecula Valley Unified).

Mock Trial began February 18. Individual winners and pairings for the Elite 8 Round of the 27th Annual Mock Trial were announced February 28. The Elite Eight Competition was held March 4 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

The winning team from Riverside County will compete March 20-22 at the California State Mock Trial Competition.
