RCOE wins $3.3 million early reading grant

“We are very pleased with this award,” said Kenneth M. Young, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools. “Reading is a fundamental skill children need to be successful in school.”

Project READ is a program that serves 208 children and families in four Head Start preschool centers in Riverside County. The centers serve low-income children, most of who are limited English proficient and/or have an identifiable disability.

It also provides training for teachers and programs to increase parental involvement in early reading and language development for children.

RCOE was one of only 32 agencies in the United States to receive grants.

“An enormous amount of hard work and dedication is required to receive this grant from the United States Department of Education Office of Legislation and Congressional Affairs,” wrote Congressman Ken Calvert in announcing the award. “Your extraordinary support of the Early Reading First program has earned you this recognition you rightfully deserve.”

The grant will be used by RCOE for the next three years.
