Community Service

More than 100 community leaders participated in the Fifth Annual Riverside County Community Action Planning Workshop (RCCAP) in Rancho Mirage.

Participants chose new community service projects. Participants included educators, community members, police, government leaders, and members of the clergy. They explored community needs and identified which needs required immediate attention.

Since the first RCCAP Workshop in 1999, participants have worked on improving literacy, mobilizing community members, providing information about county resources, improving public transportation, hosting youth summits and an Education Summit; and motivating students to participate in community improvement projects.

This year, participants picked projects that include:

• Youth Summit – The annual Youth Summit will return this year with added features for parents of young people to participate.

• Asset Building – This group will promote the 40 developmental assets young people need as identified by the Search Institute.

• Facilities – This group is working on making the community more aware of facilities needed for schools in coming years.

• 0-5 Readiness – This group is working to promote programs that prepare children for kindergarten.

• Marketing – This group will raise awareness about education issues and needs in the education community.

RCCAP members honored five individuals for their commitment to community service:

• Ms. Doris Adams, Menifee Valley Community Cupboard
• Mr. Jamil Dada, Riverside County Workforce Development Board
• Sister Esperanza Jasso, Sacred Heart Congregation – Mecca School
• Mr. Dalip Singh, Singh Chevrolet
• Mr. Louis Stark, Wildomar
