Hemet Wins 2003 Academic Decathlon Hemet High School won the 2003 Riverside County Academic Decathlon, the team’s fifth victory in a row. Awards were given out February 5 at the University of California, Riverside. There were 19 teams in the competition this year. Students competed January 25 and February 1, in 10 academic tests and demonstrations, including the Super Quiz, a three-round event conducted like a college bowl. The bowl consists of 30 multiple-choice questions focusing on this year’s theme. The Academic Decathlon is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education and the University of California, Riverside. Hemet West Valley High School, also in the Hemet Unified School District, finished in second place. Finishing third was Chaparral High School in Temecula. The competition also produced numerous individual winners. The theme of this year’s event was “Understanding the Natural World.” Students competed in both individual and team events. Each team is composed of nine students, three from each grade-point category and includes: three “A” (Honors), three “B” (Scholastic), and three “C” (Varsity) students. Students accumulate individual and team points in written events in mathematics, economics, social science, music, language/literature, and art. Decathletes must also write an essay, participate in a panel interview, and give an impromptu and a prepared speech.
