Temecula Student Wins County Spelling Bee

T emecula eighth-grader Arul Sangani, from James L. Day Middle School finished first in the 26th Annual Riverside County Spelling Bee on March 18 by correctly spelling the word “bartizan.”

Seventh-grader Nhu Ton of Vista Heights Middle School in Moreno Valley, finished second and will be the alternate for the national event.

Virginia Pham, a fifth-grader at Rail Ranch Elementary School in Murrieta, represented Riverside County at the state level May 3 at California State University, Sonoma.

State competition is open only to fourth- through sixth-grade pupils.

Herman Sandhu, a fifth-grader at Three Rings Ranch Elementary in Beaumont, is the alternate for the state contest.

Arul correctly spelled “tiqueur,” which means a person subject to a tic or twitch, then two other words – “banquette” and “bartizan” – to win.
