The event, called the "Safe Schools Summit: Connecting Resources and Strategies for Education Professionals," was designed to give educators the resources they need to respond to violence.

The summit led to creation of Crisis Response Teams available to the county's local school districts.

The summit’s keynote speaker, Melissa Morgan, from the Anti-Defamation League, commended Riverside County leaders for tackling tough issues head-on. "People are afraid to talk about these issues," said Morgan. "It is so important to talk."

Diane Perez, Director of RCOE's Safe Schools Unit, presented a list of resources and trainings for school personnel to deal with violence, especially hate-related violence.

She said the summit was just the first step in what will be a series of trainings for educators and others. The county's 23 school districts were represented by superintendents, safe schools administrators, and school resource officers.
