"Garden of Friendship"

photo of students with their artwork and teachersA group of students in RCOE’s Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing class at Gerald Ford Elementary School created a special painting that they titled, “Garden of Friendship.”

If you look closely at the painting, you will see that each flower depicts “I Love You” in American Sign Language.

The painting was awarded a blue ribbon at the 2004 Indio Date Festival. Students and their work were recognized by the Riverside County Board of Education.

RCOE teacher Martha D’Arco said that students wanted to show their pride and raise awareness of disabilities. A mural of the painting on the school walls at Gerald Ford Elementary has been commissioned by Principal Kim McLaughlin.

Gerald Ford Elementary School is in Indian Wells and is part of the Desert Sands Unified School District.

Prints of the painting are available for $15. Sale proceeds will finance the Sacramento and Fifth Grade Science Camp. Contact (760) 200-4374 for more information.
