2006 RCOE Report to the Community - Supporting Excellence in Education

Third Annual Riverside County Academic Pentathlon

Academic Pentathlon, sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, is an exciting student competition that encourages and rewards academic excellence through competitive challenge.

Public and private school students in grades six, seven, and eight compete against students of the same grade level. Students compete as individuals and as team members in a series of five academic tests based upon the grade level curriculum.

These include: Mathematics, Essay, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. This event may serve as preparation for the rigorous high school Academic Decathlon competition.

Teamwork is the heart of the Academic Pentathlon. Students in their middle school years feel a strong need for peer approval and support; they are often willing to work harder for their peer group than for themselves. By helping each other to prepare for the competition, Pentathletes help bring out the potential in each other. This event teaches students to appreciate different styles of learning, interests and talents, and it enhances their ability to work as a team.

Approximately 400 people attended the Third Annual Riverside County Academic Pentathlon Awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 25, 2005.

Overall Academic Pentathlon Winning Teams:
6th Grade: Arizona Middle School, Alvord Unified School District.
7th Grade: Gage Middle School, Riverside Unified School District.
