A dozen middle schools and high schools in Riverside County have been named 2009 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education. They were among 261 statewide selected for the honor. Under new rules for the awards program, each school had to be making progress toward closing the achievement gap between black, Latino and poor students and their white and Asian peers. In its application and during site visits, each school told the state about practices that led to higher achievement.
