IN THE NEWS: Young scientific minds show off projects at
Riverside County fair

March 19, 2018

The Riverside Convention Center has been transformed into a science convention.

On Monday, March 19, nearly 500 students showed off their science projects — which involved everything from freezing tennis balls to antibiotics in manure — before judges at the Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair. On Tuesday, March 20, the public can visit to check out the young scientists’ work for themselves. It all ends Tuesday night with a big awards show.

The floor features work from students in public, charter, and private schools in 36 districts and across 22 categories, from biomedical engineering and animal sciences to robotics and intelligent machines.

IN THE NEWS: Elsinore High School again wins Riverside County
Academic Decathlon

Elsinore High School has won Riverside County’s 35th Annual Academic Decathlon.

Students from the Wildomar campus for the second consecutive year won the academic decathlon, which concluded with the Super Quiz competition Saturday, Feb. 3, at Corona High School.

Great Oak High School in Temecula finished second, Corona High School Gold was third, San Jacinto was fourth and Beaumont was fifth.

The Academic Decathlon features teams of six to nine students in 10 academic categories. This year, 21 teams represented 18 high schools competing over the past two weekends. The topic was Africa.

IN THE NEWS: Corona student ties record with third Riverside
County Spelling Bee crown

Aisha Randhawa is used to winning the Riverside County Spelling Bee, but not to working so hard.

The 12-year-old seventh-grader at Corona’s Auburndale Intermediate School correctly spelled “bulbul” in round 29 of a three-hour-plus bee to win her third consecutive Riverside County Spelling Bee championship Wednesday, Feb. 28.

She becomes just the third three-time winner in county history and the first in more than two decades.

“I’m just really happy I gave it my all,” said Aisha, who called the bee “exhausting.”

IN THE NEWS: Martin Luther King High dethrones Riverside
Poly in mock trial competition

March 3, 2018

The verdict is in and there is a new county mock trial champion. Martin Luther King defeated perennial champion Riverside Poly in the final round Saturday, March 3 to win the 35th Annual Riverside County Mock Trial Competition.

Poly had won the past two titles and 17 in all.

Murrieta Valley and Ramona shared third place in the competition, which concluded at the Historic Riverside Courthouse. They were defeated in the semifinals earlier Saturday.

IN THE NEWS: Student projects shine at Riverside County
History Day

March 10, 2018

Call them Riverside County’s young historians.

From Corona to Banning to Temecula they came together Saturday, March 10, to show their knowledge of history and prove they understand it.

It was the annual Riverside County History Day, staged at Valley View High School in Moreno Valley and run by the Riverside County Office of Education.

The number of student historians – 426 — and entries – 227 — set a record – for the sixth year in a row. This year’s theme was “Conflict and Compromise in History.”
