Teacher of the Year
Valley View High School
Moreno Valley Unified School District
An English teacher who incorporates comic book superheroes into his curriculum is sure to stand out in the minds of students in honors literature classes or credit recovery courses. A 12-year teaching veteran, all at Valley View High School, Brian previously coached basketball at the school, opened up a comic book store in the area, and has garnered thousands of dollars in donations and grants to supplement classroom instruction. He is known around campus for putting his students’ needs before his own and openly credits his students for making him a better teacher. In October, Brian was named by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, as one of only six finalists in the California State Teacher of the Year competition. In November, Harris was honored as the Mary Mcleod Bethune Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the National Alliance of Black School Educators.
