Marisela Recendez

Teacher of the Year

Teacher,
Myra Linn Elementary School
Alvord Unified School District

As a kindergarten student, Marisela Recendez began her educational career as an English Language Learner and hasn’t stopped learning ever since. In 2014, she completed her doctorate in educational leadership and is committed to advancing her belief that “teaching is the vocation that influences every other profession”. Marisela sees her role as a teacher as being an agent of change and social justice. She organized her school’s first science camp, is a frequent volunteer at family education nights, and actively looks for ways to implement culturally relevant pedagogies. Marisela serves as an extension program instructor in the evenings for new classroom teachers and now coaches other teachers and develops curriculum in her role at Alvord Unified School District. In October, Marisela was named by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, as one of only eight semifinalists in the California State Teacher of the Year competition.
