“I am truly grateful to RCOE for this recognition. This also goes to my colleagues at Bobby Duke Middle School and Coachella Valley Unified School District, as we share the same values and passion for our profession and the students and community that we serve. I thank my students for inspiring me to do what I love to do, and for allowing me to witness their amazing transformation and success stories every day. I also thank my wife, Rovina, and daughters, Karla and Stephanie, as they have been my source of love, strength, and support in my ardent resolve to continue to impact the lives and future of my students and their families.”

A teaching credential from UC Riverside, a master’s in education from CSU San Bernardino, and two engineering degrees earned in the Philippines, are the educational platform upon which Edwin Detoya’s middle school mathematics and robotics students learn from each and every day. Mr. Detoya recalls how his education brought him to America to witness how dreams come true every day. Now, he has the opportunity to help inspire students through education inside and outside of the classroom. Mr. Detoya regularly enters students into engineering-based competitions around the United States to prepare them for the competitive global workforce and to see the real-life connections with what they are learning in school. One of his students describes him as “a role model, father figure, counselor, friend, and someone who really cares for his students and has raised the level of expectations in our school.” Mr. Detoya was named as one of seven finalists at the 2018 California Teacher of the Year competition.
