History Social Science education must be a priority for schools because it is the bedrock for creating an informed citizenry. Thomas Jefferson opined, “An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.” An informed citizenry is at the heart of the foundation of an American Democracy. The tools our students learn in all areas of academics find themselves being utilized to help shape policy in classrooms, schools, cities, counties and states all throughout this country. The Riverside County Office of Education’s HSS unit is dedicated to helping our school administrators and teachers implement engaging HSS curriculum in the classroom for the express purpose of creating an informed citizen that will engage civically.
