It is recommended that students arrive to their audition site early, in order to have plenty of time to check in and warm-up (30 minutes early is suggested).

Remember to bring:

High School Honor Band Audition Instructions

Auditions

Audition time slots are 5 minutes. Students may audition for multiple instruments if they have signed up accordingly.

Two adjudicators will be present in every audition room. Official audition scores will be an average of both adjudicators individual scores. To ensure fairness, band directors will not be able to submit adjudication scores for their own High School students. In addition, auditionee schools and districts will be anonymous to adjudicators.

Adjudicators will not provide any verbal comments or feedback to auditionees during their audition.

Audition Material and Requirements

Attention auditionees! Your County Honor Band Audition will consist of 2 elements. Please make sure that you are adequately prepared to play:

  • Scales (multiple)
  • Excerpt (maximum 1 minute in length)

Scales

Please click on the scales that correspond to the instrument you are auditioning. Each student will need to play the following scales, in order, memorized, both ascending and descending:

  • Concert F Major
  • Concert B flat Major
  • Concert G Major
  • Concert D Major
  • Chromatic Scale

Please make sure that you adhere to the tempo marking of a quarter note equals 96 beats per minute. Be prepared to play these scales one after another, with minimal pause between.

Audition Excerpt

After playing scales, each auditionee will perform an excerpt (self-chosen). Please bring 2 copies of the chosen excerpt and hand it to your adjudicators before starting. Please prepare an excerpt that is a maximum of 1 minute in length, but be advised that adjudicators may stop you when they have heard enough to generate a thoughtful score.

What excerpt should you choose? It is suggested that auditionees pick an excerpt that shows their advanced capabilities and musicianship. Excerpts will be scored through the following categories:

  • Time/Rhythm
  • Tone Quality
  • Phrasing
  • Dynamics
  • Overall Musicality

In light of this, choose an excerpt that demonstrates your ability to properly play what is marked, and make sure that you are attentive to all markings!

Still can’t decide on an excerpt? Consider consulting your Band Director, who will surely be able to suggest quality excerpts for consideration.
