English Learner Symposium – Spotlight on Innovation and Excellence

We are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Riverside County Office of Education’s ‘English Learner Symposium: Spotlight on Innovation and Excellence’ with keynote speakers Dr. Katie Novak and Mirko Chardin, authors of the new book titled ‘Equity by Design’. Both are phenomenal presenters that will impact the focus we have on our EL community.

Our conference will be held virtually on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, and Thursday, December 3, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. each day. In addition to our keynotes speakers each day, there will be a variety of breakout sessions with topics regarding English learners from Riverside County and beyond. We hope you will join us for this very important event to continue the discussion on how best to support our English learners.


Katie Novak, Ed.D. is an internationally renowned education consultant with 17 years of experience in teaching and administration, an earned doctorate in curriculum and teaching, and author of 7 books, including the best-selling education book, UDL Now! and the recently released Unlearning with Allison Posey. Katie designs and presents professional learning opportunities both nationally and internationally focusing on the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), inclusive practices, and universally designed leadership.

Mirko J. Chardin is the Founding Head of School of the Putnam Avenue Upper School in Cambridge, MA. Mirko’s work has involved all areas of school management and student support. His greatest experience and passion revolves around culturally connected teaching and learning, recruiting and retaining educators of color, restorative practice, and school culture. He is also a race, diversity and cultural proficiency facilitator & leadership coach for the Aspire Institute at Boston University’s New Wheelock College of Human Development and Education and is a Virtual Module Content Provider and In-Person Technical Assistance Provider for the Department of Education’s Inclusive Practice Academy
