11th Annual Riverside County Education Summit Will Feature “Education Nation” Author

The Riverside County Office of Education will be hosting the 11th Annual Riverside County Education Summit and Models of Academic Excellence Recognition Luncheon scheduled on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros, in Palm Springs. More than 400 educators, parents, and community leaders are registered to attend.

The keynote presentation will be Dr. Milton Chen, former executive director of the George Lucas Education Foundation and author of “Education Nation”.

In his keynote address, Dr. Chen will describe trends and examples of how school districts and education partners are redesigning for 21st century teaching and learning to increase student academic success and produce high quality education programs.  Chen will discuss innovations that are changing our concepts about the very nature of education; the increasing variety of technology tools; transforming curriculum and assessment, such as place-based learning; and expanding learning time.

The day will include a series of workshops on school programs that have earned the distinction of “Models of Academic Excellence.” These workshops will include topics such as: transitioning to the Common Core state standards, supporting students for college and career readiness, meeting the instructional needs of English Learners, and preparing our teachers to address the needs of 21st century learners.

The exemplary programs being recognized as a Model of Academic Excellence have been proven successful in improving student academic achievement and can be replicated countywide. Each award winner will be recognized by Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, Kenneth Young,  during the luncheon awards ceremony.
