RIVERSIDE – Twenty-four high school teams will compete at the 33rd Annual Academic Decathlon sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education at Heritage High School (26001 Briggs Road, Romoland, CA 92585) starting on Saturday, January 30, and finishing on Saturday, February 6.

In 2015, West Valley High School emerged victorious over 19 schools at the 32nd Annual Riverside County Academic Decathlon. The victory represented their sixth championship in the last seven competitions. Elsinore High School placed second and Hemet High School finished third (see historical results at end of press release). At the 2015 California Academic Decathlon event held in Sacramento last March, West Valley finished 22nd overall, while at-large invitees Elsinore High School (27th overall) and Hemet High School (36th) also competed.

The initial day of the 2016 competition will feature essay writing, speeches, and interviews on January 30. On February 6, the teams will compete via written tests and the popular Super Quiz. The Super Quiz is the only event open to the public (besides the Awards Ceremony) and begins at 1:00 p.m. in the Heritage High School gymnasium. This year, the Super Quiz will feature a collaborative element as team members can confer with one another for 10 seconds before submitting their answers. In previous years, students had only seven seconds to submit answers and were not allowed to interact with teammates. The Awards Ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. in the Heritage High School Theater—including an announcement of the team that will represent Riverside County at the California Academic Decathlon to be held in Sacramento on March 17-20, 2016. The United States Academic Decathlon will be held on April 28-30, 2016, in Anchorage, Alaska.
