Superintendent’s Initiatives
Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Gomez, has launched multiple initiatives to ensure that every student in Riverside County will graduate from high school academically and socially prepared for college, the workforce, and civic responsibility.
This initiative is focused on ensuring that all students receive an education that gives them a competitive edge in scholarship applications, college admissions, job prospects, and career advancement. Beyond ensuring access and opportunity for all, the initiative is driving the development of dynamic skills, innovative mindsets, and the ability to adapt quickly—key elements that will define success for students in college, the workforce, and in life.

Aimed at addressing the needs of the whole student beyond the classroom, this initiative includes supporting and expanding mental health programs and services within the 23 school districts in Riverside County. Students are facing higher rates of depression, anxiety, and self-harm, and the need for every child in Riverside County to have access to mental health services has never been higher.

Financial literacy can be the great equalizer in our society by creating the next generation of students who can live within their means and gain the knowledge to become financially prosperous. A goal is to help students avoid making poor decisions based on insufficient information, while learning how to make smart money choices work for them—including access to funds that remove barriers leading to post-secondary opportunities.Learn more on the Financial Literacy Initiative page.
The educational performance, attendance, suspension, and post-secondary success rates of foster students consistently fall below the outcomes of almost every other student group. From individual student support tools and foster parent resources, to educator training tools and bridging programs to higher education, the initiative aims to build stronger connections between school, community, and government entities, to directly help foster students shift from surviving to striving to thriving.
Strong literacy skills are the foundation of all learning and contribute to a student’s ability to graduate from high school academically and socially prepared for college, the workforce, and civic responsibility. Essential literacy skills include the ability to read, write, listen, speak, research, and represent in order to think critically, create, collaborate, and communicate. Initiatives from the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools are aimed at addressing key issues facing Riverside County students and schools. From reading and vocabulary curriculum to internships and civic engagement, the initiatives seek to engage schools, community members, businesses, faith-based and service organizations, law enforcement, and other local agencies to work together for the success of the 430,000 students attending public schools throughout our county.
