Beyond ensuring access and opportunity for all, the initiative is driving the development of dynamic skills, innovative mindsets, and the ability to adapt quickly—key elements that will define success for students in college, the workforce, and in life.

Providing a Competitive Edge in Riverside County

Apprenticeship Program Gives Graduates a Competitive Edge

The summer after high school graduation is an important time for young adults heading into the real world. With the Summer Bridge program hosted by Riverside County Office of Education, the learning does not stop. Students from Riverside and San Bernardino Counties continue to learn how to navigate the workforce through apprenticeships. Pre-apprenticeships help build soft skills while students also attend post-secondary courses to gain certifications. 

New Playgrounds Ensure Everybody Can Play

New adaptive school playgrounds from Riverside County Office of Education are bringing joy, inclusion, and accessibility to students of all abilities. From wheelchair-accessible swings, to sensory gardens and musical features, these spaces ensure that every child is valued regardless of their physical or developmental needs.

These new playgrounds make it possible for every child to experience the joy of play—like swinging for the very first time. With sensory-friendly features and a universally designed layout, it’s built to support all students in an inclusive, accessible environment.

Information Technology Services

In recognition of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, RCOE's Information Technology Services unit hosted three webinars for Career Technical Education (CTE) students.

The first webinar for CTE students, “Certifications vs. College Pathways: Pathway to a Successful Information Technology (IT) and Cybersecurity Career,” explored educational and career pathways. The second focused on the importance of IT certifications in preparing students for entry-level opportunities in the IT field.

College and Career Readiness

The College and Career Readiness (CCR) Unit at RCOE launched the Riverside County International Baccalaureate (IB) Collaborative on October 6-7, a professional learning network for educators and leaders across all four IB programs: Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma, and Career-related.

The first meeting provided opportunities to share experiences, discuss common challenges, and help shape future professional learning opportunities. The team partnered with the International Baccalaureate Program, La Sierra University, and the Corona-Norco USD IB coordinator to offer three days of IB Middle Years Program (MYP) workshops at La Sierra University. The workshops brought together educators from across Riverside County for professional learning, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas and strategies.

Building Capacity for Impactful Practices

The Supporting Innovative Practices (SIP) Project partners with the Riverside County Office of Education, El Dorado County Office of Education, and the California Department of Education to expand opportunities for students with disabilities. The project supports the core work of the Competitive Edge Initiative by focusing on how to extend its reach throughout the state. 

We encourage all education partners including parents, teachers, administrators, and policy makers to explore their resources and events.
