Inclusive Transformative Social-Emotional Instruction and Mental Health Support Features

Inclusive SEL and mental health instruction play a critical role within MTSS by addressing social, emotional, and mental well-being. They ensure that SEL practices and mental health supports are integrated at all tiers to meet the needs of all students. This approach fosters a supportive environment where students are equipped with the skills to manage emotions, build positive relationships, and thrive academically. By embedding inclusive SEL and mental health strategies, schools can promote belonging, reduce barriers to learning, and enhance overall success for all students.

Key Practices:

  • Teach explicit and integrated school-wide SEL lessons that increase students' skills and resilience

  • Use trauma-informed approaches to support behavior and learning

  • Use data to identify needs and build on students' strengths

  • Include educators, mental health professionals, families, and the community

School-Based Mental Health

School-based mental health within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework focuses on addressing students' social, emotional, and behavioral needs through a tiered approach. At the universal level, schools implement preventive strategies and promote mental wellness for all students. For students requiring more targeted support, individualized interventions are provided at the secondary level, while intensive, personalized services are available for those with significant mental health challenges.

Key Practices:

  • Universal Prevention: Implement school-wide strategies to promote mental well-being and prevent issues before they arise for all students.

  • Targeted Interventions: Provide additional support through small group or individualized services for students who need more focused assistance.

  • Intensive Support: Offer personalized, one-on-one mental health services for students with significant emotional or behavioral challenges.

  • Collaboration and Monitoring: Regularly collaborate with educators, counselors, and families to assess progress and adjust supports as needed.
